Why does this need a server, when most tools on this site don't?

Browsers block a page from reading another site's raw HTML across origins (CORS) — there's no way to fetch an arbitrary page's markup purely client-side. A small server-side fetch is the only way to read what's actually live, the same reason SSL Certificate Checker and Security Headers Checker need one.

Is the URL I check logged or stored?

No — it's used only to make that one fetch and extract the tags, not logged or stored anywhere.

Does it work on pages that require a login?

No — only publicly accessible pages, since the request is made without any credentials, the same as any visitor without an account.

What's the difference between this and Meta Tags Generator?

Meta Tags Generator builds new tags from scratch, entirely in your browser. This tool reads the tags already live on an existing page. Use the Generator to create tags, this to check what's actually deployed.
