How to compress a PDF to under 1 MB
The short version: open Compress PDF, upload your file, choose Balanced (then Smallest if needed), and check the size it reports. Scanned and photo-heavy PDFs usually get under 1 MB. Text-only PDFs often can't — and this explains why.

Why 1 MB, and why it's hard
Government, bank and university application portals in particular cap uploads at 1 MB (sometimes 500 KB or 2 MB). Whether you can hit it depends entirely on what's in the PDF:
- Scanned pages / photos of documents: this is image data. Re-encoding it at lower quality shrinks it dramatically. 1 MB is very achievable.
- Digitally created text (an exported CV, an invoice, a report): already tiny per page and mostly text. There's very little to compress without turning the text into an image.

What the tool does
Each page is converted to a compressed image, then reassembled into a new PDF. That's why scans shrink so well — and why the output text is no longer selectable. For a scan that was already a picture, you lose nothing.
If it still won't fit
- Fewer pages. Only include what the portal asks for. Use Split PDF to drop everything else.
- Rebuild from smaller images. If you made the PDF from phone photos, shrink each photo to ~1500–2000 px with Resize Image, then rebuild with Image to PDF.
- Accept the trade-off. For a text PDF, the only way below 1 MB is rasterising — which is exactly what Compress PDF does. The text becomes an image; if the portal only needs it to be *readable*, that's fine.

Frequently asked questions
- Can any tool guarantee an exact 1 MB result?
- No. The final size depends on your document's content — number of pages, how much is images versus text. Pick the lowest quality that still looks acceptable and check the before/after figure the tool shows.
- My PDF is mostly typed text and won't go under 1 MB. Why?
- A lean text-and-vector PDF has almost nothing to compress. Getting it smaller means rasterising the text into images, which this tool avoids by default. If the portal truly needs 1 MB, that's a case where you have to reduce pages or content.
- Will the text still be selectable after compression?
- No — Compress PDF turns each page into a compressed image, so the output has no selectable text. For a scanned document that was already a picture, this makes no practical difference.
- Is a scanned multi-page PDF likely to hit 1 MB?
- Usually yes. Scans are image data and compress well — a 5–8 MB scan often drops below 1 MB at the Balanced or Smallest setting.
