How to compress a PDF to 100 KB

Useful Hacks Team·

The short version: open Compress PDF, choose Smallest, and check the reported size. Single-page scans and photos usually reach 100 KB. Multi-page or text-heavy PDFs typically can't without becoming unusable.

Why 100 KB is aggressive

100 kilobytes is tiny — for a five-page document that's 20 KB per page. Only heavily-compressible content (a single scanned page, a photo) fits in that budget while staying readable. Portals that ask for 100 KB or 50 KB usually expect a one-page document like an ID or a signature page.

Steps

  • Open Compress PDF and upload the file.
  • Pick Smallest and download. Check the size the tool reports.
  • Zoom in on the result. If it's unreadable, you've hit the limit of what compression can do for this file.

If it won't fit

  • Fewer pages. Use Split PDF to keep only the page the portal actually needs.
  • Smaller source images. If you built the PDF from photos, shrink each one with Resize Image to about 1000–1200 px on the long edge, then rebuild with Image to PDF.
  • Check the real requirement. Many forms say "under 100 KB" for a *photo* and allow 1–2 MB for the *document* — see PDF size limits for online forms.

Do it now

Open Compress PDF and see how small this file will go.

Frequently asked questions

Can every PDF be compressed to 100 KB?
No. A one-page scan or a short text PDF often can. A multi-page scanned document or anything image-heavy usually can't get that small while staying readable — 100 KB is only a few dozen kilobytes per page.
What's the trade-off at this size?
Compress PDF turns each page into a low-quality JPEG. At 100 KB the images are visibly soft, especially on text. It's fine when a portal only needs the document to be legible, not crisp.
My text PDF won't go near 100 KB. What now?
There's almost nothing to compress in a text PDF. Reduce the number of pages with Split PDF, or rebuild it from smaller source images — that's the only way down to that size.
